Invisible Street Light – subtle and beautiful urban design

Now you can light up trees with the subtle and beautiful Invisible Street Light, without the hassle of decorative Christmas lights. The modern and chic design of the light blends into the tree creating an “invisible” element. The light conserves energy from the sunlight during the day to produce light in the evening. Since the Invisible Streetlight does not need support, it is wrapper around tree branches adding to the “invisible” factor. Streets can be lined with these lights adding a romantic lighting to the surroundings. Whether you’re looking for lighting for residential (light up the path on your secluded driveway), commercial or industrial (add some lighting around the entranceway to your business) – the lights are non-obtrusive and will create an added touch of panache to the outdoors. Learn more about the Invisible Streetlight at Coroflot.

You’ve simply got to take your hat off to such original thinking – the remarkable Jeeves and Wooster suspended ceiling lights are by Jake Phipps. The company states that the hats ‘reflect a bygone era of imperialism, class divide and eccentricity’ – and thus re-appropriates the clothing items to this unexpected, thought-provoking use. Made from authentic bowler and top hats, this lighting makes a statement without saying a word. An interesting political paradox emerges from these ‘classic British cultural icons’ that once said so much about their wearer. Now, we can appreciate the form – the sharp tailoring and silky interiors. Function modern art: Jeeves and Wooster pendant lights are by the London-based company Jake Phipps, and are available to buy direct from the studio.

Loft tip enhance space through room dividers
Loft tip – enhance space through room dividers

I am a big fan of lofts and frankly enjoy living in the heart of the city. There you can be surrounded by great restaurants, theaters, shopping, art galleries, and coffee shops. It-s not all glamorous though. The tradeoff is always less space when you are in so close.

A smaller apartment or loft space creates additional challenges when decorating. Most of us have more stuff than we need and yet we want to cram it all into our home. Another challenge is having one large open space. As humans we like to have some break in the routine where we dwell. Being able to escape to a study, or a TV room, may be just the rest and relaxation needed to recharge the batteries. Further, you may have a roommate or child and need privacy even though a loft is small.

One tip for such challenges is using room dividers. There are free standing versions as well as sliding door versions that can create a room when you need one. Another handy idea is using sliding doors for pantries or closets. This frees up having a door that must swing outward to open and close. Often times, there is no room for the door to swing to. There are some very stylish room dividers on the market. The two models pictured here are from Raydoor. New York City designer Luke Siegel founded Raydoor to create panels that transmit light and provide dampening of sound.

Pure modern kitchens from Poggenpohl
At Furniture Fashion, we are big fans of modernism and enjoy the simplicity, form, and function offered by this style of design. I was moved when read a statement from Poggenpohl about its thoughts on modern purism.
“Derived from cubism by Le Corbusier, purism is the art movement oriented towards the severe form and clear structure of composition which also found its expression in the Bauhaus school of design. Modern purism from Poggenpohl is based on this tradition, applying it to the design and functionality of the modern kitchen. ”

There is truth in that statement when I look at pictures of their work. There is little left to waste and a push to get to the core of the purpose of each component in the overall design. Everything belongs, fits together, and yet provides its own unique look and overall blend. Though they are a German based company, there are showrooms and dealers all over the world where you can see their creations up close and personal.

In some of my previous articles I have presented furniture styles of some of the great designers of the past like Eames, Nelson and Noguchi. Well I am happy to say there are some up and coming designers that have a vision of what it takes to create cutting edge styles that are far beyond ordinary. LYX which is the Swedish word for luxury, has expounded on the 60-s and 70-s clean lines and added a modern twist. Their hand
made pieces are made in small amounts which add to their cost and worth. Many of the pieces are based on straight lines but still manage to keep comfort as a focus.
