Modern Island Home in Amsterdam Nature Reserve

Netherlands architecture firm VMX Architects has coupled contemporary aesthetics and creature comforts in their design dubbed Sodae House. This modern island home boasts an unusual blend of angles and glass, making it an unlikely find among its natural surroundings on the island of Kostverlorenkade 1 in Amsterdam. “The starting point for the concept was the perception of the landscape, the distant high buildings of the Zuid As and the Rembrandt Tower as well as the view of the aeroplanes travelling to and from Schiphol,” according to the architects. The ground floor becomes a den of sorts, occupied by the home’s most intimate areas like the bedrooms and baths. A walkout to the garden makes you feel at one with the landscape. The upper floor is where all the living and socializing is done, complete with an open-concept loft-style kitchen and living room abutting cool glass walls. Below grade for work and play, the basement conceals a work-out room and a home theater. The whole home has an eclectic style to it, from the outside in. But even in their odd mix, every element encapsulates luxury. VMX Architects.

Sustainable Tree House Actually Hugs Trees

From the pages of building and architecture website BD, London, this modern residential design is a tree house by all accounts – built from trees, built among trees. With an £800,000 grant to construct in a conservation area of west Beaminster, Dorset UK, Western Design Architects have planned this sustainable home with recycled timber, a Green roof and a ground-source heat pump. The contemporary 3,875-sq.-ft. house is comprised of three pods, each approximately five ft. off the ground. And while these pods are not actually secured to the trees that dot the surrounding landscape, the magnificent oaks will pierce through the terraces of the home. “While not physically bolted to the surrounding oak trees which are protected by a tree preservation order, the oaks will penetrate each terrace so you can hug a tree if you want to, ” according to the architect, reports BD. Inside, the main pod houses the kitchen, dining and living areas, and is connected to the neighboring two pods which accommodate the bedrooms. The start for construction is slated for spring 2009. A private, peaceful location surrounded by nature sets the tone for this chic concrete home, described by the architects at Schuchart/Dow as “contemporary Northwest natural.” The clients’ love of the outdoors, botany, wildlife and their own horses infuses the countryside home with a rustic charm. Spanning 11,000 sq. ft., this concrete home construction features modern touches like contemporary concrete floors and walls, a stainless steel kitchen and basalt countertops, brought back to Earth with “country” details like post-and-beam construction of reclaimed Douglas Fir. Deepening the connection between nature and architecture, large windows in every room give this natural house design lush, green views. The authenticity of this rustic house style is alluring, surrounded by tranquil forest and a landscaped pond outside. Schuchart/Dow

A Modern, Modular House Embraces Outdoor Living in Victoria, Australia

Known in architectural circles for designs that identify with their surroundings, Jackson Clements Burrows Architects has hit the nail on the head yet again with this modular house design perched on a steep slope overlooking Separation Creek in Victoria, Australia. The modern angular architecture juts out from the hillside, making visible the shards of glass, wood and a rainbow of green which form the home’s facade. The home’s 2368 sq. ft. of living space stretch across its two levels, incorporating three bedrooms, a dining room and kitchen, and various modular additions that house the sunroom, study, indoor living area and an outdoor deck. Stylish Home Design in Sao Paulo, Brazil – a rooftop deck, a lap pool and a cool basement

Sumaré stylish home by designer Isay Weinfeld has an exotic flair about it – not a typical house by any standards, but it’s definitely something we could get used to. This luxurious home in Sao Paulo, Brazil, was designed as a live-work space, and by “live” we mean entertain, relax, enjoy and create, for the graphic designer who calls this contemporary building “home.” The modern design makes the most of its small lot and height restrictions by delving below grade, providing for three living levels in a two-storey design. The basement level is a bright and open space, and enjoys direct access to a rear garden, eliminating the feeling of being underground. The home’s main floor is slightly raised above ground, and is enclosed in glass for a bright and airy interior, home to a sitting room, dining room and the kitchen, with access to a larger outdoor area. The second floor boasts the bedrooms, a ballet area and swimming facilities enclosed by the cool grid that characterizes this modern house from the outside. Topping off this awesome design is a rooftop deck for entertaining guests or simply taking in the spectacular city skyline. Isay Weinfeld
