Sebastian Mariscal Architecture Studio came up with this cool couple of homes in La Jolla, California. Dubbed 2inns, the contemporary pair of identical stilted houses is made for outdoor living. The unique stilt design affords the luxury of outdoor spaces incorporated on all levels of the house, including on the ground floor, where a fabulous covered deck invites al fresco living and entertaining. The facade of these block-like structures boasts the balance of concrete on the sub-level, a glass-enclosed main level flooded with natural light, and “suspended” atop the glass level is an Ipe wood clad upper level. Presenting the 2008 Kitchen Design Competition results. Organized by Electrolux ICON and Interior Design Magazine, the $100,000 Kitchen Design contest was geared towards members of the architect & design community in an effort to create out-of-the-box kitchen concepts to meet the changing needs of the modern family. Grand Prize Winner: Marcello Zuffo from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida prevailed with a futuristic design that included movable components that can adapt to the changing needs. “We were impressed with Marcello’s entry because of the innovative way he interpreted the challenge of meeting the needs of the modern family.” You can read more about his win in the March 2009 issue of Interior Design magazine. Second Prize Winners: On the second podium were Kim Letven and Nada Bibi, of WE Design in Brooklyn, NY, for their seamless integration of indoor and outdoor space. The design features a wall made of sliding glass doors that allow for easy access to the appliances and living space. Third Prize Winner: The third prize went to Gisue Hariri, of Hariri & Hariri Architecture in New York, NY, for her futuristic kitchen design boasting modern aesthetics and efficient use of space, ideal for today s multitasking family.

The King Louis Tables are made out of cardboard by combining a 3D computer with CNC processing. The King Louis Tables, like other pieces of furniture we’ve seen here in the past, are made of cardboard, so they might not last as long as you imagine, nor will they be as durable as a regular table. But they’re definitely an interesting concept design, and one that can only remind us what an important role technology plays when it comes to all aspects of our life, furniture design included. Beach House Architecture Celebrates the Australian Beach Shacks

Simplicity is the name of the game when it comes to this modern beach house architecture. The clients’ request for “much more room” has lead to the redesign of this aging vacation home in Anglesea, VIC, Australia. The architecture firm responded with a collection of timber boxes surrounding the existing main beach house. “The great Australian tradition of the ‘shack’ is in danger of being superseded by bloated mansions with four bathrooms and all the trappings of modern life,” according to the architects behind this design idea, Andrew Maynard Architects. “With this project we wanted to celebrate the shack and have kept close to the original building’s footprint to avoid taking over the rugged coastal block.” Although it’s not exactly “bare bones,” this beach house architecture really focuses on the key necessities – comfortable spaces with easy outdoor access and of course, outdoor decks, balconies and living spaces from which to enjoy the tree-top views.
